Leon Neyfakh, on loan from Harvard, files this dispatch which needs no
further introduction:
Before last night's fundraiser at Tribeca's swanky Canal Room got
started, Brooklyn congressional candidate Kevin Powell described his
chief political strategist, Michael Cohen, as a hip guy. That's quite a
compliment from a VIBE magazine writer who starred in MTV's The Real
World.
"I know none of you will believe it when I tell you that the last
campaign I was very seriously involved in was in 1968," Cohen told the
crowd, "when a man named Robert F. Kennedy ran for president of the
United States."
Scattered applause, a couple of "wows" by the bar.
"Yeah, give it up for him," Cohen said. "I worked for him the night he
was assassinated."
More wows this time.
"I still haven't recovered from that, but I'm happy to tell you tonight that I have found, after all these years, someone in whom I believe as sincerely and strongly as I believed in Robert F. Kennedy. And that man will be the next congressman of the 10th congressional district in Brooklyn."
For everyone that missed Powell's speech (and goody bags with
anti-hangover pills), don't worry. He is putting out a mixtape with a
local DJ to promote his candidacy.
"J. Period Presents Official Kevin Powell for Congress Mixtape, Powell
For The People Vol. 1" will be out July 4th. Vibe reports that the CD
will feature "political raps from such talent as Talib Kweli, M-1 from
Dead Prez and Black Thought from The Roots."
