Harry Belafonte has a letter for you.

Despite his recent (and anemic) campaign financial disclosure report, Assembly Member Roger Green of Brooklyn says he's not dropping out of the 10th Congressional race. He has less than $5,000 on hand, and his campaign is carrying $20,000 in debt. City Council Member Charles Barron also has $20,000 in debt, but has more than $60,000 in his congressional campaign account. Incumbet Rep. Ed Towns...has more than $400,000. Trying to downplay the buzz (okay, Rock Hackshaw's speculation) about dropping out of the race, Green said he's planning four fundraisers in the coming weeks. Who is else is fundraising for Green? Hedge fund managers interested in educational reform are throwing a fundraiser for him. Also, a fundraising letter signed by actors-turned-activists Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover has apparently been drafted. [a copy of the letter is after the jump]. Green told me his legislative work is a higher priority than raising money.
"You can't raise funds from Albany. In New York City, you can raise money on the ground."

Harry Belafonte & Danny Glover New York, NY

Dear Friend,

We are writing to you today to ask your help in electing to Congress, a great friend of the movements for peace and justice. Roger Green is running for Congress in the 10th District in Brooklyn. If he is elected, Roger will push to have U.S. forces withdrawn from Iraq and to establish with the U.N. and NATO, a multi-national interim security force to bring peace and stability to Iraq. Since the time he was first elected to the New York State Assembly at age 29, Roger has fought for public policies that enhance the principles of peace and justice.

He created the New York State Martin Luther King Institute, a public institution dedicated to the study of nonviolence and civil rights/human rights social history.

He authored the law to establish the Center for Law and Social Justice. Located at Medger Evers College, the center serves as a legal advocacy group with a focus on economic and social justice. He is the founder of "The Children of Abraham", a peace and restorative justice organization dedicated to unifying the faith traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam on behalf of the world's children.

He chaired the Rwandan Children's Aid Committee to raise support and public consciousness in response to the Rwandan genocidal conflict. He co-authored New York State's antibias law. This law is designed to increase penalties and reduce violent attacks upon racial minorities and people having different sexual orientations.

These are just a few of the reasons we urge you to contribute to Roger's campaign for Congress. Roger's opponent supports George Bush's energy plan, supports George Bush's medicare plan, supports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on six of every ten key votes and voted to send more U.S. jobs overseas through his support of CAFTA.

Roger Green is in need of our collective help. It is our privilege and our honor to support Roger's campaign for Congress. To lend your support please complete the enclosed contribution form and send it with your check payable to Green for Change to P.O. Box 25256, Brooklyn, NY 11202. You can also contribute online at www.greenforchange.com.

Roger will support working families, children, and the rights of all Americans. It's time to send a real Democrat to Congress from the 10th District -- Roger Green. Sincerely,

Harry Belafonte Danny Glover
