500 Muni-Meters Will Be Installed Throughout City
In an effort to create more curbside parking space throughout the five boroughs, the city is planning to install about 500 new muni-meters by the end of the year, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation said.
Muni-meters, each of which collect money for multiple parking spaces and replace about 13 individual meters, allow motorists to pay for parking with city-issued prepaid cards, and in many cases with credit cards. They increase the number of available curbside parking spaces by about 15%, a spokesman said, because drivers pack their vehicles closer together when they are not forced to park directly in front of a parking meter. There are currently 2,580 munimeters throughout the city.
