The Department of Education is appointing an educator at a local nonprofit, Danielle Salzberg, as the interim acting principal at the Arabic-language middle school whose principal resigned Friday.

Ms. Salzberg worked on the planning team for the Khalil Gibran International Academy while employed at the nonprofit New Visions for Public Schools, which shepherded the school's creation last year, the Department of Education said in a statement released this afternoon.

The school's founder and original principal, Debbie Almontaser, resigned Friday after coming under fire for quoted comments that seemed to support T-shirts reading "Intifada NYC."
