EPA Report Not Enough, Representatives Say

By Special to the Sun | September 13, 2007

A new report by the Environmental Protection Agency that outlines the recovery process and public health risks of a major oil spill in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn isn't thorough enough and residents deserve more, elected officials and community advocates said yesterday from the site at Newtown Creek. "We will not stop pressing the issue until residents are fully informed of all the health risks and the remediation process has been expedited," Rep. Anthony Weiner said. The oil spill, which is from leaks in Exxon/Mobile recovery wells, was first discovered by the Coast Guard in 1979 and is now believed to have spread 30 million gallons of oil throughout the 3.5-mile creek.
