Art Shopping With the Azrias

By PIA CATTON | June 20, 2008

The Whitney Museum of American Art hosted its annual Art Party on Tuesday night at Skylight studio on Hudson Street. Sponsored by Max and Lubov Azria, proprietors of BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP, the night consisted of drinks and dancing, as well as a silent auction of 70 works of art donated by contemporary artists.

This was the second year that the Azrias — whose brands include BCBG, Max Azria, and Herve Leger — hosted the event. And just as many of the guests at the event did, the couple bid on the artworks. At the end of the night, four works were going home to the Azria household. Mr. Azria celebrated as he wrote in the winning bid on Annie Morris's "Untitled Peg Piece" (2008), a series of about 300 clothespins affixed in three rows and painted to look like female nudes. They also won Dike Blair's "Untitled (Marie)" (2006), a colorful gouache-and-pencil depiction of one small square of a face; Drew Heitzler's two manipulated photographs "Untitled (Map)" and "Untitled (Standing)" (2008); and Charles Long's "Untitled" (2006), a unique albumen photograph.
