Dylan Thomas Prize Finalists Announced

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | July 15, 2008

The 14 finalists for the Dylan Thomas literary prize were announced yesterday, the BBC reported. The award honors English-language works by authors under 30, and is one of the largest literary purses an author can receive.

At a press conference in Swansea, Wales, the late poet's hometown, actor Michael Sheen read the names of works of fiction and poetry that will vie for the $115,000 prize, to be announced in November. The list includes the novels "The Secret" by Zoe Brigley and "Submarine" by Joe Dunthorne, both from South Wales, as well as "God's Own Country" by Englishman Ross Raisin and "Zoology" by American Ben Dolnick, and the poetry collection "Trouble Came to the Turnip" by Caroline Bird, an English writer and at 21 the youngest author being considered for the prize.

Other finalists come from South Africa, Kenya, Jamaica, and Iran. A short list will be announced in September.
