Haneke Will Direct Mozart For Mortier
In a hint of the bracingly contemporary interpretations that it will offer under its new general manager, Gérard Mortier, New York City Opera has announced that the filmmaker Michael Haneke will direct Mozart's "Cosě Fan Tutte" in 2012.
Mr. Haneke, who directed a production of "Don Giovanni" for Mr. Mortier at the Paris Opera in 2006, is currently in town promoting his movie, "Funny Games," starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, and Michael Pitt. Entertainment Weekly has described "Funny Games" as "mockingly sadistic and terrifying." Mr. Haneke set "Don Giovanni" in Paris's financial district, at the headquarters of a multinational company, with the main character as a CEO driven mad by power and easily available sex.
