Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean, "In the Heights" composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the New York Daily News and its publisher Mort Zuckerman will be honored by the New York Immigration Coalition, an advocacy group, at its 20th-anniversary gala June 2, the organization announced Thursday.
Born in Haiti, Mr. Jean was raised in Brooklyn and New Jersey and has received international acclaim for his social conscience and music. He has also been a leading activist in providing humanitarian aid to his native country with the creation of his foundation, Yéle Haiti.
Mr. Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for and stars in the Broadway show "In the Heights," a musical that depicts an immigrant community in Washington Heights. The show has been nominated for 13 Tony Awards.
A former director of the NYIC who is now at the Migration Policy Institute, Margie McHugh, will also be honored for her work as a leading advocate for immigrants' rights.
