Tacita Dean Wins Boss Prize
The Guggenheim Museum turned into a nightclub on Tuesday night for the announcement of the 2006 Hugo Boss Prize. British video artist Tacita Dean, known best for her film projects, was awarded the $50,000 prize at a party in the museum that went on well past midnight.
Administered by the Guggenheim Foundation, the award is given to an artist who is deemed to represent a significant development in contemporary art. The biennial prize, founded in 1996, has been given five times, and its recipients are selected by a jury from top contemporary museums. The only American to win it has been Matthew Barney. This year's finalists included two Americans, Jennifer Allora and Aïda Ruilova, and a group of international artists: Guillermo Calzadilla of Puerto Rico; John Bock of Germany; Damián Ortega of Mexico, and Tino Sehgal of Germany.
