The Democratic National Committee's decision to hold its nominating convention in Denver in 2008 almost fell apart because of labor concerns before it was announced in January. Now, organized labor is making more trouble for the Democrats.

The AFL-CIO is threatening to demand that the DNC move its convention to another city if Colorado's moderate Democratic governor, Bill Ritter, doesn't back down from his veto of a bill that would eliminate one of two elections required to form a union in his state.

This should be an interesting battle to watch.

Democrats have been gaining in the West based on a model of fiscal responsibility and social moderation — something of a departure from their usual interest-group politics. If the AFL-CIO can simply yell jump, and the national party can prevail upon Mr. Ritter to comply, then maybe the Democratic Party out West won't look so different after all.
