NYSP columnist Liz Mair notes the speculation that former Rep. Scott McInnis, who's been exploring a run for Senate to replace the retiring Senator Allard in Colorado, is about to drop his bid.
This seat is a top 2008 pick-up prospect for Democrats in a state where everything has been breaking Blue since 2004 — a Senate seat, two House seats, both houses of the state legislature, and the governor's mansion.
McInnis is a social moderate who was seen as having a good shot in the general election. But it appears lack of conservative enthusiasm may well have put an end to his run.
This Denver Post story gives some background on the race.
McInnis's career as a lobbyist certainly could be a handicap in the current environment, with Republican corruption still so much on Americans' minds. But a candidate from the socially conservative wing of the party doesn't strike me as a great bet in the current political climate in Colorado, either.
The Senate picture, especially out West, does not look great for Republicans in 2008 at this early date.
