Contrary to the widely distributed report from The Politico, Senator Edwards of North Carolina is not suspending his campaign for president.

According to Edwards: "The campaign goes on. ... We have no intentions of cowering in the corner."

Mr. Edwards announced today, in a Chapel Hill, North Carolina, press conference, that his wife Elizabeth's cancer has returned — cancer in a rib on her right side. He said it is not curable, but it is treatable.

Perhaps this is a bit cynical, but...

What will all the folks say who just said Mr. Edwards had his priorities straight in dropping out?

Particularly amusing: Andrew Sullivan vs. Andrew Sullivan...

Here's Mr. Sullivan at 12:17: "Edwards Suspends Campaign: He does it because his wife has a recurrence of cancer in some degree to be further explored. It is of a piece with his character to do this; and a simple testament that he has the right priorities and values to be a president of the United States."

Here's Mr. Sullivan at 12:39: "Edwards Forges On: The campaign should go on, as life goes on. It should neither help nor hurt it. But I will say this: Elizabeth Edwards is a truly remarkable human being. And her marriage is an inspiration to all of us."

I'd also point out one of many such comments from Daily Kos:

Absolutely the right, and ONLY decision (65+ / 0-)

JE is not only a candidate and husband, he is the father of two very young children. I became a mother later in life and it's an exhilarating but also exhausting experience; I can't imagine trying to battle cancer at the same time. Let's let the whole family work on the things they need to do.
It really can't be both, can it? That Mr. Edwards would have been heroic for dropping out, and that he's also a hero for carrying on?

UPDATE: Sullivan addresses his distinctly different takes.
