Not to turn this into Obama Day here at NYSunPolitics.com, but Steve Clemons of the Washington Note has come across a letter from Palestinian Arab sympathizers urging Senator Obama to "stand his ground" as regards his statement that "Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people."

"We have noted with concern the harshness of the criticism you have received for this response," the letter reads. "Your campaign has been built around a new brand of politics that offers hope to Americans eager for courageous, moral leadership. We thank you for extending this approach to a conflict which has historically suffered from a lack of American vision, engagement, and leadership."

With friends like these...

Of course, Mr. Obama received harsh criticism of this statement for a reason. America cannot be neutral between a terrorist pseudo state (where government-conducted terrorism against Israeli civilians enjoys the overwhelming support of the public) and a peaceful democracy.

Being labeled as the pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel candidate would not be a smart move for anyone in either party's primary.

Mr. Obama seems to realize this. As our Eli Lake reports today, Mr. Obama is doing what he can to distance himself from an essay written by George Soros, a major funder of Democratic causes, urging America to force Israel to negotiate with the terrorist-run Palestinian government.

Mr. Obama also seems to have a fairly pro-Israel record, in word and deed, as this story from the Politico's Ben Smith reports.

But sloppy rhetoric and sloppy thinking about the Middle East are not going to fly with people who care about the survival of Israel.
