Well, that didn't take long...

According to a Quinnipiac poll out this morning (see Question 2) of registered Republicans in Ohio, Fred Thompson, only a few days after announcing on "Fox News Sunday" that he is "going to leave the door open" to a run for president, has already tied the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney.

In a survey taken from March 13 to March 19, of 1,122 Ohio voters, both Messrs. Romney and Thompson get 6% of the vote among registered Republicans. Mayor Giuliani came in at 31%, Senator McCain of Arizona at 21%, and the former speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, at 8%.

Respondents were asked to choose between: Sam Brownback, Jim Gilmore, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Chuck Hagel, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, George Pataki, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson, and Tommy Thompson.

My prediction in a column yesterday was that Mr. Thompson could quickly tie or best Mr. Romney once polling organizations began testing his support. Now, I continue to believe this Thompson boomlet is largely hype -- social conservatives and others dissatisfied with the current crop of candidates are casting about for a savior (no pun intended).

But the fact that Mr. Thompson could register such respectable support so quickly, and the fact that Mr. Romney has had to claw his way up to the bottom of the barrel -- well, let's just say I'd rather be Mr. Thompson at this point.

In related news...

See this story out of Florida. A major Florida financial backer of Mr. Romney has jumped ship over to the USS Rudy. Richard Blankenship, a Jacksonville-area investment banker and President Bush's former ambassador to the Bahamas, cited Mr. Romney's low level of support among Republicans and the former governor's shifting positions on various issues. "The changes in core beliefs gave rise to some concerns. You have to have an anchor in life," he said of Mr. Romney.
