At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (March 1-3 in Washington, D.C.), I took a bit of video, filming the major candidates' speeches as well as some man-on-the-conservative-convention-floor interviews.

While conservatives certainly aren't in the best spirits of their lives, I'm not sure I saw the utter, soul-shattering despair witnessed by others. Below are some clips from the convention floor. While there's a wide-ranging wish for a second-coming-of-Reagan-type candidate to save conservatives from the compromises they're facing with any one of the three leading candidates for the Republican Party's presidential nomination, these folks certainly aren't in any worse shape than they were in 2000, when they got stuck with "compassionate" conservative George W. Bush.

First up is Richard Viguerie, author of "Conservatives Betrayed," a direct-mail pioneer known as one of the "funding fathers" of the conservative movement. Mr. Viguerie, suffice it to say, is not excited about the current Republican field for '08. Here, he talks to me after appearing on a panel about the future of the conservative movement on the conference's first day:

Next up is CPAC attendee Mary Hall of Maryland. Ms. Hall had just caught Mayor Giuliani's speech on the conference's second day, and shares her thoughts with me:

Next, I talked to CPAC attendee Gregg Shore of Florida. Mr. Shore did not catch the mayor's speech, but still shared his thoughts with me on the current GOP field, including his preferred "dark horse" candidate:

Also right after the mayor's speech, I talked to these students out in support of Mr. Giuliani. It wasn't an official group (despite my referring to them as "Students for Giuliani" in the video ... I don't think there was anything that formal about their organization). Anyway, they shared their thoughts about the mayor, the primary, and what students at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University really thought of Senator McCain's visit last year:

Last for our purposes here, but certainly not least, was Beverly Perlson of Illinois. Ms. Perlson was at CPAC collecting signatures and messages of support to send on to her son serving in Afghanistan. I talked to her a bit about her project, but also (because we're just this obsessed here) about 2008:

Links to the longer videos — of the Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Rep. Jeb Hensarling speeches — to come.
