President Clinton has declared that he still thinks Vice President Gore could try for the presidency again in 2008.

"You've got the prospect that Vice President Gore might run," Mr. Clinton said last night on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Now, talk that Mr. Gore might enter the race has swirled for a while, though some pundits and political types dismissed it as far-fetched. Does Mr. Clinton, who may be the most politically plugged in man in America, know something that makes him think this is a live possibility?

What was striking about the former president's comment was that he was not asked about the prospect of a Gore candidacy. The question that drew the mention of Mr. Gore and several other candidates was actually about the threat Senator Obama of Illinois poses to Senator Clinton's White House bid. It's possible Mr. Clinton was trying to list other possibilities just to drain some air out of the Obama balloon. Still, it makes you wonder if there are sub rosa indications that Mr. Gore is exploring a run.

Also of interest in the same interview: the ex-president's fairly categorical statement that the Virginia Tech shootings do nothing to strengthen the case for gun control. Mr. Clinton is one of the Democrats who blamed the party's perceived stance on guns for the losses of a number of candidates, including Mr. Gore in 2000. The former president could be trying to ease the issue off the agenda for 2008 so that his wife, and other Democratic contenders, aren't pressured to take positions that could hurt them in the general election.
