The former senator from Tennessee, Fred Thompson, is recovering from lymphoma, he has told Fox News. According to Mr. Thompson: "I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future — and with no debilitating side effects."

Reportedly, Mr. Thompson, an actor on "Law and Order," was diagnosed with indolent lymphoma about two-and-a-half years ago after a routine physical.

Fox News will have an interview with Mr. Thompson at 4 p.m. EDT today, on "Your World With Neil Cavuto." (Fox is also where Mr. Thompson announced that he was considering running for president.)

Mr. Thompson's announcement of this medical news can probably be taken as a sign of seriousness about his presidential campaign.

He's also far from the first candidate in this race to have a brush with cancer. John McCain has had skin cancer. Rudy Giuliani has had prostate cancer. And John Edwards's wife, of course, has had a recurrence of her cancer.

All of these candidates are at some pains to reassure the public that their medical and family issues would not affect their performance as president.
