The headline out of the latest Zogby poll of South Carolina Republican primary voters is that John McCain holds a small lead. Or, as the Zogby press release puts it: "Arizona Sen. John McCain has finally found a place where he holds a lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination."
Of course, it's within the margin of error, and, taken in conjunction with other South Carolina polls, it just confirms what we already know: The race is tight in the Palmetto State, with Mr. McCain and Mr. Giuliani well in the lead, and Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson fighting it out for third.
As has been happening in a lot of places, recently, Mr. Thompson wins that particular battle, despite not being in the race. Mr. Romney continues to claw his way up to the bottom of the barrel.
Zogby also offers this analysis, breaking South Carolina down by region:
"It is very intriguing to see that John McCain is doing best in the northern and western parts of South Carolina – the very areas where he got crushed in 2000. It is also clear that there is a big pool of undecideds among conservatives, particularly in the western part of the state. Should Fred Thompson, a conservative from not–so–distant Tennessee who now registers in third place, enter the race for the GOP nomination, those undecided conservatives could give him a lot of room to grow."
I suspect he's correct about Mr. Thompson having a lot of room to grown. It will be interesting to see when some of the other firms that have been polling the state — including Fox News/Opinion Dynamics and ARG — start adding Mr. Thompson to their questions.
