Campaign finance reports filed today show Senator Obama of Illinois far outpaced Senator Clinton in fund-raising for their presidential primary campaigns. Mr. Obama raised $24.8 million, while Mrs. Clinton brought in $19.1 million, in primary money for the first quarter. The $5.7 million difference is higher than the about $4 million rumored in press reports.
It's another, "Wow!" number for the Obama camp and an indication of why Clinton finance chief Terence McAuliffe was reported to be so dour during fund-raising events last month.
The different performances of the two campaigns are largely due to the fact that more of Mrs. Clinton's money came in donations that exceeded the per-person limit of $2,300 for primary gifts. In other words, her backers had more cash to splash, while Mr. Obama's donors were larger in number but gave smaller gifts.
