So, we have some of the first-quarter fundraising totals in from the Republican side. Mitt Romney, as expected, is leading the pack. His camp reports $23 million raised this quarter. That total includes a $2.35 million dollar loan from the former Massachusetts governor himself — and an insignificant ($20,000) transfer from his 1994 Senate campaign.

Rudy Giuliani has reported $14 million raised for the primary, with another $3 million in the bank for the general election.

No word yet from either candidate on his burn rate. And no word yet from John McCain as to his first quarter total.

Mr. Romney's burn rate is of some interest. It's likely to be high. No one's been spending money on organizing, advertising, and the like to the extent that Mr. Romney has been. And, to date, it's landed him trailing Fred Thompson — and, on occasion, tied with Sam Brownback.

Hotline speculates that Mr. McCain will place third in the Republican money chase. It wouldn't be surprising, given the problems he's been having in the polls and his rocky relationship with the Republican establishment. But given that he's spent all these years trying to become Mr. Establishment, it's still something of a shock in the broader picture.
