In light of recent events, now seems like the time to officially add Fred Thompson to our National GOP Index.
As you can see (below, after the jump), Mr. Thompson enters the race slightly ahead of Mitt Romney at the national level.
The candidates' averages are (at the national level):
Giuliani: 27% McCain: 21% Thompson: 11% Romney: 8%
Mr. Thompson tops out at 14% in the Quinnipiac national poll; he bottoms out at 6% in the ARG national poll. Mr. Romney tops out at 10% in the CNN national poll; he bottoms out at 7% in the WNBC/Marist national poll.
Mr. Thompson is, of course, further behind in some of the early primary states, where personal attention is all-important....
In Iowa, in a recent Strategic Vision poll, the field broke down like this:
Romney: 20% Giuliani: 18% McCain: 16% Thompson: 10%
In New Hampshire, a recent ARG poll put things at:
McCain: 30% Romney: 23% Giuliani: 21% Thompson: 3%
And, in South Carolina, the most recent ARG poll put things at:
McCain: 32% Giuliani: 23% Thompson: 13% Romney: 10%
Lastly, here's the new Index:
