One of our recent posts about a Nazi comparison used by a CNN anchor in a rant against immigrants' rights advocates has riled up a Jewish group, which is now calling for the firing of the newscaster, Lou Dobbs.

The Sun has a brief story on the developments, including a near-apology from CNN on Mr. Dobbs's behalf. The news release from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society is here.

Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, who was apprently one of the foci of Mr. Dobbs's analogy, has reportedly said he is praying for the CNN anchor and other critics, whom the mayor said may have been unloved as children.

Mr. Dobbs once delivered straight business news for CNN. Now, however, his hourlong program is most notable for the Howard Beale-style indignation he musters over illegal immigration and trade matters.

Since this is a news story that may still advance a notch or two, I'll leave it to others to assess the propriety of the Nazi comparison and whether Mr. Dobbs should be dismissed. This probably involves a complex formula relating to Don Imus that is beyond me at this hour. I would note, though, that however skewed the coverage Mr. Dobbs's program gives to immigration and trade, he does cover the issues in some depth — indeed, in a great more detail than anywhere else on network news. He also dispatches reporters to do daily updates on related stories most other news outlets are neglecting, such as the ongoing Chinese espionage trial in Orange County, Calif. On some days, a CNN reporter working for Mr. Dobbs's show seems to have been the only journalist in the courtroom. That's surely a public service of some sort.
