While quite far from the recent Des Moines Register poll showing Mitt Romney on top with 30%, over John McCain's 18% and Rudy Giuliani's 17%, a Strategic Vision poll out today confirms Mr. Romney's lead in Iowa.
In this poll, Mr. Romney leads with 20%, Mr. Giuliani's in second with 18%, and Mr. McCain's in third with 16%. Now, given the poll's 4% margin of error, this is basically a three-way tie. Nonetheless, it's clear Mr. Romney has been gaining in the state, and this is another data point.
Fred Thompson trails in fourth place in this poll, at 10%. Tommy Thompson, as often in Iowa, makes a surprisingly high showing at 7%.
On the Democratic side, in the same poll, John Edwards continues his lead at 29%. Barack Obama comes in second at 24%, and Hillary Clinton comes in third at 16%. Bill Richardson, who's been doing decently in Iowa, just misses double digits at 9%.
UPDATE: Byron York also weighs in on the Iowa GOP numbers. Ditto what he says. The Register poll is an outlier; Mr. Romney is, nonetheless, moving up; Iowa hardly matters in light of the February 5 mega-primary.
