Mark Levin, over at National Review Online, writes that Rudy Giuliani is constrained from attacking the immigration bill because he's angling for an Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsement in California. Ahnold is pro-comprehensive immigration reform.
There's certainly a political logic to this, but it's also worth noting the obvious: Mr. Giuliani is far more pro-immigrant than National Review. While principle isn't a characteristic I like to ascribe to politicians particularly often, both John McCain and Mr. Giuliani seem to actually think that legalizing millions of currently illegal immigrants is the right policy — and both believe that immigration strengthens America.
Mr. Giuliani emphasizes that he supports much tighter border control — I'm not sure there are many people in America who don't — but I think he and Mr. McCain are simply pretty much in agreement on the policy.
Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson have both sounded relatively in tune with the Bush position in the past, too. But we all know that Mr. Romney will take whatever position goes with the air flow around him. And Mr. Thompson ... well, we'll see. It's too early in his non-campaign to see what kind of candidate he'll be. But, as I noted Friday, he's been no restrictionist hero in the past.
