So, President Bush and the Senate have come to agreement on an immigration deal "that would grant quick legal status to millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S. ... [and] would also fortify the border."
This will, of course, be labeled "amnesty" by the Republican Party's restrictionist wing.
What does it mean for the GOP field in 2008?
Well, nothing that involves having your picture taken with Ted Kennedy is good in a GOP primary — even if you look away and pretend not to notice him. So, that's bad news for John McCain.
Nonetheless, I maintain my position that, despite all the ink spilled on this topic, and despite all the hullabaloo that immigration is (always) the next big sleeper issue, it will have precisely zero impact on who is nominated.
Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney can decide how much, if at all, they want to attack whatever bill ultimately comes together. But it's beyond unlikely that this issue will decide who the party's nominee is. And having a pro-immigration candidate would be better in the primary.
