Yesterday, I noted that Fred Thompson had tied John McCain for second place in the national Harris Interactive poll. But, it was an interactive poll, so I recommended a healthy dose of salt.

Well, we've got some new data today, out of the Quinnipiac Ohio poll. And it's clear that if Mr. Thompson hasn't quite caught Mr. McCain yet, things are certainly moving in that direction. Among registered Republicans in Ohio, Mr. Thompson is now comfortably within the margin of error of Mr. McCain. Rudy Giuliani is at 23%, Mr. McCain is at 17%, and Mr. Thompson is at 15% — the margin of error is +/- 5.4%. What's more, that represents a 7-point jump for Mr. Thompson from last month's Ohio poll.

As for other headlines out of the poll:

* Mr. Giuliani beats all comers in a general-election match-up in Ohio, but Barack Obama comes closest:

Giuliani-Obama: 43%-42%
Giuliani-Clinton: 47%-42%

* Hillary Clinton has a solid lead among Ohio Democrats:

Mrs. Clinton is at 38%, Mr. Obama is at 19%, and John Edwards is at 11% (that's down 6 points from last month in Ohio — is the cancer bump fading?).

* Mr. McCain beats Mrs. Clinton (barely), but loses to Mr. Obama:

McCain-Clinton: 45%-44%
McCain-Obama: 41%-44%
