I don't mean to tempt the Great Law of Headline Question Marks ... I really don't know. But a couple of polls out today point to a Fred Thompson "entering the race"-type surge.

One poll, by Public Policy Polling (ALERT, DANGER: THIS IS ROBO-POLLING), shows Mr. Thompson jumping to the lead in the key state of South Carolina. Mr. Thompson leads with 27%, followed by Mitt Romney at 16%, John McCain at 15%, Rudy Giuliani at 14% and Newt Gingrich at 11%.

Another PPP poll (YES, ROBO) shows Mr. Thompson in second place in Iowa, after Mr. Romney — it's not first, but it's a big jump (if it's real).
