The results of the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll (with change from April in parens):
Giuliani: 32% (-1) McCain: 19% (-2) Thompson: 11% (+2) Romney: 9 (0)
The poll also gives us some insight into how Fred Thompson is changing the race...
When the results are recalculated as if Mr. Thompson weren't in the race (using the second choices of Thompson voters), Rudy Giuliani jumps 5 points. Mr. McCain bumps up 2 points, and Mr. Romney stays level.
Most national polls show a similar pattern — Mr. Thompson seems to pull most from Mr. Giuliani. At the strategic level, though, Mitt Romney is still the most threatened. Mr. Giuliani can afford to lose a few points in the national polls. Mr. Romney can't afford the social-conservative establishment abandoning him for a slicker, more Reaganesque horse.
