...or should I say, lack thereof.
The Pew survey linked above shows that while Mayor Bloomberg has rather good name recognition — 65%, which is better than Mitt Romney (62%), Joe Biden (58%), Fred Thompson (51%), or Bill Richardson (48%) — he's still got a low ceiling of potential support for his run for president.
Only 9% of poll respondents say there would be a "good chance" they'd vote for him. Some 23% say there's "some chance." Now, that's not to say $150 million could change things, but...
Combining Mr. Bloomberg's "some" and "good" chance numbers, he's got 32%. It's not fair to compare him to the frontrunners, but how does this compare with some of the non-candidates and the back-of-the-pack real candidates?
Fred Thompson is at 47%. Newt Gingrich is at 30%. Al Gore is at 46%. Joe Biden is at 30%. Tommy Thompson's at 28%.
Mr. Bloomberg, despite his non-partisan, above-it-all sheen and high name recognition, is hardly head-and-shoulders above this pack.
Again, money could change a lot, but I just don't sense an overwhelming hunger in the country for a Bloomberg candidacy. And I'm pretty far from assuming the mayor is even serious about this.
