A new Strategic Vision poll out today has Fred Thompson pulling up close to Rudy Giuliani:
Rudy Giuliani: 30% Fred Thompson: 24% John McCain: 11% Mitt Romney: 8% Newt Gingrich: 4%
This is important because...
Mr. Giuliani has to make a strong showing (and probably needs a win) in Florida. Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina are all possible for Mr. Giuliani to win, but at least Iowa and New Hampshire are also very strong possibilities for Mitt Romney. And while Mr. Giuliani's also placing well in South Carolina, it's still a good shot for Mr. McCain or Thompson. Florida — on January 29th, after IA and NH, but before the tsunami (SC's date is in the air) — is the crucial big-state backstop upon which much of Mr. Giuliani's February 5 strategy depends.
He's polled exceedingly well there, so far. And, usually, he's been 10 or more points ahead of the pack. Now, Mr. Thompson is within 6. Mr. Thompson is known to be focusing on Florida, and Jeb Bush folks may well swing behind him, too.
All this means that Rudy'd better have his eye on the Sunshine State.
