The Massachusetts Legislature today defeats a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. This means the Massachusetts same-sex-marriage decision is essentially entrenched in the law. Opponents trying to get it overturned won't have another chance until the 2012 election. It seems increasingly unlikely that Massachusetts will overturn the state supreme court's decision, which would mean dissolving thousands upon thousands of existing marriages.
What does it mean for 2008? Well, for one thing, it highlights Mitt Romney's failure to stop gay marriage in his own state (not that there was much he could have done). And it puts the issue in the headlines for another day. But, otherwise, not much. The battle lines on this have been drawn for a long time.
