McCain Appeal: We're Short of 2nd Quarter Goal

John McCain's campaign has just sent out another one of its desperate-sounding fundraising appeals, this one claiming that the campaign is still short of its second-quarter fundraising goals — on the day before the quarter will officially close:
I know we've thrown an awful lot of email at you in the last few weeks, most of it talking about the need to raise end of quarter donations for the campaign. You have responded to the call and we appreciate all you have done.
But...we are close to but short of our overall fundraising goals for the second quarter. I know it feels way too early to be raising this kind of money for a 2008 presidential race, but the fact of the matter is with so many primaries and caucuses crowded into the early weeks in 2008, this is the time that we have to raise the money to be able to compete in all of the early primary states.
The goal the campaign has set is $10 million. Robert Novak reported earlier this month that they're having a hard time getting there. McCain strategist John Weaver has claimed they'll do better than in their first quarter ($12 million), but that continues to seem unlikely.
