The latest Quinnipiac poll is out, and it has some more realistic-looking numbers regarding Fred Thompson:
|
May 3 |
June 13 |
% change |
| Giuliani |
27% |
27% |
0 |
| McCain |
19% |
15% |
-4 |
| Thompson |
14% |
15% |
+1 |
| Romney |
8% |
10% |
+2 |
As I stated yesterday, there's no question Mr. Thompson is zooming up in the polls — but that means overtaking John McCain for second, not tying Rudy Giuliani for first. That may happen eventually (heck, anything may), but it's not happened yet.
Some other interesting nuggets from the poll:
* Fred Thompson has a good favorable/unfavorable rating among Republicans, 45%/4%, but a full 49% don't know enough about him to have an opinion. In other words, his image is almost entirely unformed in the public mind. He has celebrity, like Rudy Giuliani, but people don't know what they think of him, unlike Mr. Giuliani (whom they know they like).
* Speaking of Mr. Giuliani, this poll indicates that his support goes well beyond his record on 9/11. In fact, 55% of those who say they are likely or certain to vote for him say they are making their decision based on his record as mayor or positions on the issues. Just 35% say they're voting based on how he handled 9/11.
* As for those who say they won't or are unlikely to vote for Mr. Giuliani, only 4% say it's because of his personal life, 30% say they disagree with him on the issues, and 53% say it's because they prefer another candidate. This is why Mr. Giuliani keeps showing up as the top second-choice of Republican primary voters. And, as I've said before, this is why the former mayor will benefit disproportionately as other candidates drop out of the race.
