The ever-quotable dean of the New York congressional delegation, Rep. Charles Rangel of Harlem, had this to say at the Capitol this afternoon when I asked for his reaction to Mayor Bloomberg's decision to leave the GOP, Hizzoner's second party switch of the decade.
"I really think the mayor just wanted to make sure he had the chance to participate in every available party," Mr. Rangel said, "and this is the only one left."
Mr. Bloomberg had been a lifelong Democrat before registering as Republican to run for City Hall. Of course, Mr. Rangel seems to be overlooking the Conservative, Independence, and Working Families parties, among others, but he is probably not alone in doing so.
As for whether Mr. Bloomberg will make a run for the presidency, the chairman was stumped. "I don't know," he said.
