A new poll out of South Carolina, the Winthrop University/ETV poll, puts Rudy Giuliani in the lead in South Carolina with 19%. John McCain comes in second with 14%. Mitt Romney is in third with 12%. Fred Thompson is in fourth with 6%. (undecided, though, is the real winner at 30%.)
I can't speak (write?) to the general accuracy of the poll. It's a poll of 670 registered voters statewide — so a looser standard than likely voters.
Nonetheless, some interesting results we'll look at below the fold...
* Despite the fact that he only pulls 6% in the poll, roughly 40% of Republicans agree or strongly agree that Mr. Thompson should get in the race. 11% strongly agree, perhaps giving us a sense of where he would jump to now that he's entered (the poll was taken the 16th to the 27th, before Mr. Thompson's soft entry into the race).
* Iraq weighs by far the heaviest on the minds of South Carolina Republicans, rating at 51% when voters are asked what's the most important issue facing this country. Illegal immigration comes in a distant second at 10%.
* Republicans in South Carolina are more sexist than they are racist. Only 54% of Republicans think America will be ready for a female president within 12 years. That's compared to 75% among Independents and 85% among Democrats. As for whether the country will be ready for a black president within 12 years, 78% of South Carolina Republicans say yes — which is comparable to 79% of Independents and 83% of Democrats.
* And, if you look at Question 9 (on page 2), you'll see that a candidate's having had cancer is unlikely to hurt them at the polls (unless respondents are lying to the pollsters so as not to sound nasty — which is a distinct possibility).
