So, now Fred Thompson is getting the almost-thumbs-up from the former senator from Virginia, George "Macaca" Allen. It's sort of like the former quarterback of the high school football team, having lost his legs in a tragic drunk-driving accident the year before, cheering on his replacement in the state championship.
Mr. Allen, of course, is the one who was doing the drinking in that metaphor — having lost what should have been a relatively easy reelection because of pure buffoonery. And Mr. Thompson is the new guy — who wouldn't even be on the field if the guy who was supposed to be there hadn't injured himself.
Mr. Allen may cheer. But, really, he just curses his lot in life.
