The numbers are in, and Rudy Giuliani has taken the lead in the money race for 2008 on the GOP side:
McCain: $11 million Romney: $14 million Giuliani: $17 million
Mitt Romney loaned himself $6.5 million on top of his fundraising, putting him at $20.5 million total receipts for the 2nd quarter.
UPDATE (3:56 p.m.): It's worth noting that Mr. Romney's take isn't that much higher (well, 27%, but not that much in nominal terms) than John McCain's. Also, Mr. Romney's cash on hand is $12 million — subtract the $6.5 million loan this time around and the $2.35 million loan in the first quarter, and he'd have roughly $3 million cash on hand. That's only $1 million more than Mr. McCain's $2 million.
So, Mr. Romney has the luxury of using his own cash to keep his campaign afloat. And all's fair in politics and war and whatnot. But if fundraising's a marketplace — and it is — Mr. Romney is hardly the hottest commodity.
UPDATE II (7:45 p.m.): It's worth noting that $2 million of Mr. Giuliani's number is general-election funds. That brings him down to $15 million for the primary. Still the biggest fundraising haul, but by a narrower margin.
