Soren Dayton nails it in this post on Christian Right leaders getting ready to line up behind Fred Thompson — and not Mitt Romney.
The most significant data point is that James Dobson greenlit this attack on Mr. Romney (a radio segment titled: "Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, an outspoken critic of pornography, is called to task for his ties to Marriott hotels; a chain that makes money by providing porn to guests"). Mr. Dobson, of course, is one of the most powerful Evangelical figures in America — and he wouldn't be launching an attack like this if he were ready to stand behind Mitt.
Soren has some other data points, but the logic here has been clear for a while: Evangelicals are not going to line up behind a Mormon from Massachusetts with a history of flip-flopping on their issues when they could instead line up behind a good-'ol Tennessee boy with a fairly consistent conservative record (if not a spotless one on abortion). As I've long argued, the Romney campaign is as cooked as the McCain campaign, if not more so (strength in Iowa and New Hampshire notwithstanding). This is a Rudy v. Fred race. And that'll be a barn-burner.
