Looks like the anti-Clinton messages coming from aides to Senator Clinton's top rivals yesterday were no fluke. The Sun carried a story by yours truly this morning detecting a decidedly more negative tone towards the former first lady from the rival campaigns of John Edwards and, to a lesser extent, Senator Obama of Illinois.

That story was based largely on a CNN interview Sunday with top advisers to the campaigns. Now, the former Michigan Congressman and House majority whip who serves as Mr. Edwards's campaign manager, David Bonior, is making it pretty clear that his anti-Clinton jabs were deliberate and not just the product of a bad breakfast burrito.

In a video posted on Mr. Edwards's official campaign blog site, Mr. Bonior calls President Clinton's decision to pursue passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement "one of the worst decisions of his presidency and one of the worst legislative decisions made in the history of this country."

The subtext here, and in Mr. Bonior's comments yesterday, is that Senator Clinton is responsible for the decisions made by her husband. That seems dubious as a factual matter, though the statements she and her supporters make about returning to the good old days of the Clinton era probably mean she has to answer both for the good and the ill of that time.

The Web interview with Mr. Bonior was conducted by Wade Norris of ultimatepolitics.net, who tells me he is a volunteer for Mr. Edwards. The entry on the campaign's blog also calls attention to the anti-Clinton aspect of the interview.

On an unrelated note, Mr. Bonior also speaks positively about efforts to "seal the border" as part of the now-dormant immigration bill and he does not object as Mr. Norris declares that one benefit of closing the border would be to limit the supply of labor, driving up wages for American workers. That's not an argument I heard much from Democrats during the immigration debate.

Postscript: Mr. Norris tells me the interview took place on July 5th, though it just went up on the Edwards blog site today.
