As I mention in my column this morning, if John McCain takes public matching funds in the primary, he'll be subject to very low state-by-state spending limits.
The full breakdown of those limits from the FEC is here. (These are estimates based on 2007 dollars -- the official 2008 limits have yet to be released.)
As you see, they're roughly $1.4 million in Iowa, $800,000 in New Hampshire, and $2.1 million in South Carolina. Now, you can subvert these limits in a lot of ways according to the FEC — such as by calling everything a national headquarters expense and including fundraising appeals in all communications to the voters. But they'll still be a handicap as Mitt Romney pours money into these states.
