I've thus far declined to set up a Mitt Romney death watch for one very serious reason: I think he's already dead ... or, rather, was hardly ever alive. He has pumped millions of dollars into Iowa and New Hampshire to buy some inflated numbers. But those will be short-lived when his rivals begin pushing back.
Nonetheless, if I had a death watch, this would be its latest item...
Remember how Mr. Romney recently said, "We can't win the presidency without a pro-life, pro-family Republican." That was yesterday. He was taking a shot at Rudy Giuliani.
Well, now take a look at this little nugget from 2002 — dropped in Jonathan Martin's inbox by an unnamed "rival campaign" — on the subject of Mr. Romney's social conservatism (or lack thereof).
The quote's from ... Mr. Romney.
Asked about his possible national ambitions, he said: "I would like to do a good job, and beyond that I haven't a clue. ... I don't know that the world is pining for a progressive-on-social-issues governor of Massachusetts."
Not quite the description he would choose today, is it?
