Thank God we have the FEC to protect us from political criminals like Jim Oberweis.
Mr. Oberweis, a social conservative and dairy farmer, has been fined $21,000 for appearing in a TV ad for his dairy farm in 2004. Why? Because it aired while he was running for the Republican senate nomination (ultimately won by Alan Keyes, who went on to lose to Barack Obama) in 2004.
Mr. Oberweis says he won't contest the fine. And our ludicrous campaign-finance system romps on, trampling the First Amendment as it goes.
CORRECTION: Of course, Jim Ryan actually won the Republican primary in question. After a sex scandal broke, he dropped out, and the state GOP handed the spot to Mr. Keyes — who lost.
CORRECTION 2: Urg... That's JACK Ryan. I'm going to try to quit while I'm behind now.
