Women and the Draft

A very biased source (one with half a dozen daughters) points this out to me, and it's probably worth notice: Why hasn't a bigger deal been made over Senators Clinton and Obama saying during the Democratic YouTube debate that women should have to register for selective service (i.e., be eligible for the draft)?
Now, I confess to not being shocked by the idea. Perhaps that's because I'm young, and I don't remember a time when women didn't serve in the military. Maybe it's because Israel is the model of compulsory military service with which I am most familiar.
Nonetheless, I suspect my gut reaction to the idea is atypical. This seems like a deadly idea, politically, in red states, rural area, with swing voters, etc.
