Liz Mair looks at the race for Senator Allard's seat in 2008. Mr. Allard, a Republican, is not running for reelection. Rep. Mark Udall, a Democrat, is running on the Democratic side. Former Rep. Bob Schaffer is supposed to be running on the Republican side. But a story today casts some doubt on that.
Colorado's been trending blue for a while, so this seat is already a long-shot for the GOP to hold onto. And Mr. Schaffer, if he runs, is probably too socially conservative to hang on. But even worse than a weak candidate is utter disarray as to whether Mr. Schaffer is running or not.
The upshot is that come January 2009, Colorado is much more likely than not to have two Democratic senators.
