The latest Quinnipiac poll, conducted August 7-13 (the Iowa Straw Poll was on the 11th, meaning the poll was taken on four days before the straw poll, on the day of the straw poll, and for two days after), gives us the following numbers:
| |
Aug. |
Jun. |
May |
| Giuliani |
28% |
27% |
27% |
| Romney |
15% |
10% |
8% |
| Thompson |
12% |
15% |
14% |
| McCain |
11% |
15% |
19% |
It's tough to call this an Iowa bounce, since for only 2 out of the 7 days this poll was taken was the result of Iowa known. Still, if you include Saturday, the day of the Iowa Straw Poll — and figure that the coverage of Mr. Romney, who was certain to win, helped — it could be.
A look at some other numbers from the Q-Poll, after the jump...
Other things to note on the Republican side:
* Fred Thompson's gender gap remains: He gets 14% with men, 9% with women.
* Rudy Giuliani's reverse gender gap doesn't show up here: Mr. Giuliani usually does better with women, but here he has an even bigger gap here than Mr. Thompson (7 points versus 5 points).
* John McCain's drop continues: From 19% back in May to 11% now; single digits are on their way. If the Romney angle weren't the most important thing here, I'd have to list this under McCain Death Watch.
* Fred Thompson could be losing ground because of his failure to announce a formal candidacy: Three points isn't life or death, but doubts seem to be building about how serious the former Tennessee senator really is. I suspect serious, so this should all turn around with an announcement.
On the general-election side:
* Hillary Clinton beats Rudy.
* In general, all the Democrats do quite well against all the Republicans.
