According to the latest Rasmussen poll in the state, Mitt Romney's Iowa lead has solidified (change since May in parentheses):

Romney: 33% (+14)
Giuliani: 14% (-4)
Thompson: 12% (+3)
Huckabee: 8% (+6)
McCain: 6% (-12)
Brownback: 4% (+2)
Tancredo: 3% (0)
Paul: 3% (+3)
Undecided: 14% (-8)

The biggest gain here is by Mr. Romney. The biggest drop is by John McCain, down by twelve points and diving into the single digits.

If Mr. McCain is really using an early-state strategy, as he has repeatedly insisted, then it must be a New Hampshire or South Carolina strategy.

But wait... Mr. McCain is at 10% in New Hampshire (in the latest ARG poll), while Mr. Romney and Rudy Giuliani are essentially tied at 26% and 27%, respectively.

South Carolina? Mr. McCain is hovering around 10% there, too, with Mr. Giuliani and Fred Thompson battling it out in the 20s.

It remains very difficult to see how Mr. McCain would make a comeback at this point.
