More staff shake-ups at the Thompson non-campaign.
The narrative the campaign seems to be pushing is that this shows that Bill Lacy, the new campaign manager, is large and in charge — and, thus, that there's no longer a "Jeri problem," of Mr. Thompson's wife running his campaign. The narrative is plausible, as Mr. Lacy ran Mr. Thompson's successful senate campaign. But we'll all be watching for any further shake-ups ahead of the widely expected September 4 announcement.
It's also worth noting that the Thompson press shop now includes Robert Traynham, the longtime spokesman for the former senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum. A controversy erupted in 2005 when Mr. Traynham was outed as gay — a significant surprise, as his boss, Mr. Santorum, was considered the most anti-gay member of the Senate, until his defeat in 2006. Mr. Santorum, of course, supported the Federal Marriage Amendment, writing a ban on gay marriage into the constitution; Mr. Thompson has pledged a more federalist approach, letting individual states decide on such matters.
