On Monday, the Fred Thompson campaign defended its lackluster June fundraising in part by noting that: "One month ago, the DNC attacked Thompson (in the Politico) for potentially raising more money than he'd need for the exploratory period."
The only problem? That attack (a version of which also appeared on DailyKos) didn't come from, and apparently wasn't directed by, the DNC. It came from Adam Bonin, an independent attorney and blogger. Mr. Bonin complained. And now the Thompson campaign has issued the following correction...
I value credibility and accuracy, so I want to let you know about something I've been told about my recent fundraising note. I wrote "the DNC attacked Thompson … and said they'd "argue aggressively" against him. The DNC rolled out that hit piece at Daily Kos…" and linked to a Daily Kos post making the argument that had been made by the DNC. The Daily Kos blogger responsible for the piece has written to me to say he was neither paid, nor contacted, by the DNC and that he found the links himself after reading the ABC News and Politico pieces that covered the DNC's argument. I accept his word for it, and wanted to make the correction to all of you. My apologies for the trouble. ---------------

Definitely the right move from the Thompson shop.
