Thompson Gives Back Money

That FEC complaint filed against Fred Thompson — alleging that he abused his "testing the waters" status — must have teeth. Mr. Thompson is giving back tens of thousands of dollars that were raised by his committee for use in the general election. General election funds, of course, are hardly necessary to test the waters for a primary campaign — raising the question of just why his organization thought it was OK to accept them in the first place.
The FEC complaint and the Thompson campaign's response to it is something to keep an eye on. It may slip from people's minds now that the real, official campaign is on. But it could result in a big fine — up to seven figures — down the road.
